Jacquelinne White, BFA ,1958, and MFA1961. Jacquelinne White ceased being a musician when she lost three quarters hearing when she was about 30. She went back to school to learn to be an artist. Her work has been shown almost entirely in museums or in college or university galleries. Her work has been presented in group shows in such places . She has shown oils, water colours and prints in one person exhibitons. Her first one person exhibition which was two months after graduating with the MFA was at The California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Her invitations to show included a travelling exhibiton celebrating the 100th year of the railway reaching the West Coast of the USA. One hundred USA artists were invited to take part. She was invited to join John Cage ,the well known musician,and Kenneth Rexroth ,poet , in an exhibition in San Francisco. In 1991 and 1993 she published children's books,one of which was nominated for Canada's Governor General's Award and also was given an award in California. Her oils and water colours have taken numerous awards. She is primarily a painter. Her illustrations for the two children's books were her first and only venture into commercial art. She is currently working on a series that is a continuation of the series of which included Rhythms of Spring # 1. She has taught all her adult life. She preferrs teaching rather than attempting to try to live by sales of her work. She avoided showing at commercial galleries because she wished to be free to express herself honestly in her work and without the influence or direction of others such as gallery personell. Although she has not shown commercially there have always been sales whenever she exhibited. She loved her students and rejoiced in their accomplishments. Many have become her treasured friends. She frequently lectures, sits on advisory boards and in general takes great interest in education in general and the creative arts in particular. |
